Blizzard is releasing WoW Classic today, which is a major day for World of Warcraft fans. Blizzard’s official attempt at (and response to) vanilla servers that have proven to be successful among WoW fans is WoW Classic. With it, World of Warcraft fans will be able to play the game as it was shortly after its release in 2004, with no expansions and no significant modern changes.
If you’ve ever felt nostalgic for the old days of World of Warcraft, this release is for you. Expect a much slower pace, with a greater emphasis on questing and incremental progression over a longer period of time rather than rushing to endgame material. So, when do you think you’ll be able to play?
When does WoW Classic launch?
WoW Classic is available today, August 26th, in the United States, but depending on where you are in the world, it could be available on Tuesday, August 27th, thanks to the wonderful magic of time zones. Look at the map below to see when WoW Classic will be released in your region.
The game will go live at 6 p.m. EDT in the east and 3 p.m. PDT in the west, making it a distinctly North American launch. If you live in Europe, expect a late-night launch – 12 a.m. on the 27th in France, to be exact. People in Taiwan, Korea, and Australia, on the other hand, are stuck with the game going live in the early morning hours of the 27th, making their situation even more difficult.
How much does WoW Classic cost? ( how to play Wow Classic )
WoW Classic, unlike the most recent retail expansion, does not include an upfront payment before you can play. To play, all you need is an active World of Warcraft subscription, which means that most people who are interested either don’t need to do anything or simply renew their subscription in order to gain access to WoW Classic.
World of Warcraft subscriptions are $14.99 a month, and although monthly subscriptions are uncommon in 2019, WoW is still popular enough for Blizzard to justify them.
How do I play WoW Classic?
You’ll need to download Blizzard’s Battle.net launcher from the company’s official website to play WoW Classic. Once that’s done and you’ve subscribed to World of Warcraft, all you have to do now is download the game using the launcher and wait for it to finish. You’ll see a drop down menu above the big blue “Play” button after the game has been downloaded; pick World of Warcraft Classic from that menu, press Play, and you’re in.
Can I create WoW Classic characters and select my realms ahead of time?
You’ll be relieved to learn that the answer to your unusually specific query is “yes.” Before the game goes live later today, you can build characters and choose which realm you want to play in. Blizzard opened up character development and realm selection a few weeks ago to allow players to assert their character names, so even if you missed out on claiming a common name, you can still have your characters created now and start playing when the game launches.
Blizzard recently increased the per-realm player cap from three to ten, bringing the total number of players per account to 50 across all realms. In addition, the company introduced five new realms to the server list, four of which are player-vs-player realms and one of which is a standard player-vs-environment realm.
If you’re making characters now, try to avoid making them on realms with a high or complete population, as you’ll almost definitely be stuck in a queue until the game launches.
Wrap-Up ( how to play Wow Classic )
This is a significant milestone for both Blizzard and World of Warcraft fans. It’ll be fascinating to see how famous WoW Classic becomes in the coming days and weeks, and how much of that playerbase it can retain as the post-launch timeframe stretches out into months.
